Freelancer or agency: which one do you actually need?

When the project has a single clear owner on your side, a defined scope, and no need for five specialised roles (designer, PM, QA, backend, frontend) running in parallel. You get lower overhead, direct communication with the person actually writing the code, and typically a lower price for the same output — because you are not paying for an agency’s account management layer.

When you need guaranteed capacity regardless of any single person’s availability, formal contracts and SLAs for compliance reasons, or genuinely need multiple specialists (design, backend, DevOps, QA) coordinated at once on a large project.

This is the real risk people worry about, and it is fair. Mitigate it contractually: require regular repository access (not just a final handoff), milestone-based payment rather than a large upfront sum, and written documentation as a deliverable, not an afterthought. If it does happen, a project takeover by another developer is a normal, solvable situation — not a rebuild from zero.
