Five checks before you send a deposit — code samples, written scope, and payment structure.
What should I check before hiring?
- Real, public code — a GitHub profile with actual commits, not just a portfolio site. Code you can read tells you more than a case study you can’t verify.
- A written scope and fixed price, not a rough hourly estimate for a defined project — hourly makes sense for open-ended maintenance, not for a project with a clear end state.
- Milestone-based payment — a deposit, a mid-project payment, a final payment on delivery. Never the full amount upfront.
- Third-party reviews — a marketplace profile (Upwork, R10.net or similar) with a visible completion count and rating is easy to verify and hard to fake.
- A plan for what happens if they become unavailable — regular repository access answers this before it becomes a problem.
